AN INTERVIEW WITH AUSSIE PROGRESSIVE METAL OUTFIT.
An interview by Anthony Talanca
SICK AND SOUND has the pleasure to present to its readers an exclusive interview our Senior Editor and Live Reporter Anthony, had with EARTHBØUND progressive metalcore outfit hailing from Australia.
We are following up with the band after the release of their new self-released album LIQUIFY EP which Anthony has reviewed for SICK AND SOUND readers at address: www.sickandsound.it/earthbound-liquify-album-review .
- Where exactly are you guys from in Australia, and how would you classify the music scene there?
Tom (vocals): I’m from Croydon, Victoria, but the rest of the boys are from South Gippsland, Victoria. The music scene is very rich with metal acts of varying styles in Melbourne – and I gotta say I feel it’s hard to compete with such mind blowing acts who regularly perform around us!
Daniel (lead guitar): Being in a saturated market like Melbourne, it drives us to continue creating better and better music.
- How would you guys classify your sound for viewers that have not yet heard of you before?
Tom: Progressive metalcore, with elements of Architects/Pre-Singularity Northlane.
- What musically, sonically, etc is the biggest difference between Liquify and Solstice?
Tom: For the vocals side of things, I would say the lyrical content was more personal in this new release. “Monochrome” had addiction in mind – in particular my personal overuse of time on the computer. “Nebula” I wrote about my girlfriend. “Watercolour” was written when I was in headspace where I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere with my life and just wasting time, etc.
- What is your favorite song off of Liquify?
Tom: It’s difficult to pick one, but I’d have to go with “Monochrome”.
Rhys (drums): Monochrome and Evaporate equally.
Jake (rhythm guitar): Monochrome hands down.
David (bass): For me it’s Evaporate.
- Your song Aquamarine has a feature with Jacob from Thornhill. That was actually the way I found you guys. How did that feature come together and what was it like working with him?
Tom: Jacob is a really friendly dude and a pleasure to work with. He helped with writing the lyrics to “Aquamarine” and came up with the parts for himself. We were actually working with Thornhill’s bassist, Nick Sjogren, who mixed/mastered “Liquify E.P” for us, and when we were writing the instrumentation of “Aquamarine” we thought “Man, we gotta see if Jacob would want to feature on one of our tracks”. So we asked him, and he was like “Yeah of course!”
- When I listen to the Liquify record, I hear a lot of old Northlane vibes to it. Is that a sound you were going for? What other bands influenced your sound?
Tom: Adrian Fitipaldes is a big influence to my vocals, and I absolutely love Discoveries and Singularity. My other influences would be Sam Carter (Architects), Serj Tankian (System of a Down), C.J McMahon (Thy Art is Murder), Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage), Bryant Best (Saviour) and Mike Patton (Faith No More).
- Who are some of your favorite bands/artists right now to listen to?
Tom: I’m currently spinning a lot of Currents, Saviour, Polaris and Lil Peep.
Rhys: Polaris and Wage War are my favourites right now.
Daniel: Eternity Forever and Polaris!
Jake: Invent Animate and Currents at the moment.
David: Polaris as always.
- Who is a band that you would love to tour with?
Tom: Absolutely would love to tour with Saviour. (I really like them if you can’t already tell.)
Rhys: Touring with any of Northlane, Polaris or Architects would be a dream.
Daniel: Like Rhys said, definitely Polaris and Northlane.
Jake: Periphery have always been a massive inspiration for me, so I would love to tour with them.
David: Northlane more than anyone else.
- So many Australian bands make it onto the scene in this genre of music. Why do you guys think your country is so successful in producing such top-notch bands?
Tom: Must be something in the beer we drink!
- Do you have any big tours/shows coming up? And where is a place/country you would love to tour?
Tom: We’ll be playing a mini-festival called Heavy AF in May alongside Boris the Blade and Hollow World. I would love to tour the U.S.A and Europe (especially France and Italy!)
Rhys: Japan and Europe for sure.
Daniel: Japan would be a dream.
Jake: Can you see there’s a theme of us wanting to go to Japan?
Thank you for your time and all the best for the promotion of your new record. We are longing for more music to be dropped by Earthbound and support you into Europe!
