THE SIMPLE-COMPLEXITY DICHOTOMY.
I ALONE. BIO AND LINEUP.
The band was formed in 2014 by singer and guitarist Gerswin Reynolds and drummer Perrin Defreitas, as an outlet to channel their collective talents into a musical project. This band would be rounded out by friends who shared the same passion for songwriting. Drawing on the philosophy of simple-complexity, the band strived to create a new sound, combining simple styled riffs with progressive elements.
Among the band’s main influences we shall mention Deftones, Chevelle, Karnivool, Three Days Grace, Escape the Fate, Falling in Reverse, Egypt Central, Nothing More, and Shinedown.
I Alone band is currently lining up Gerswin Reynolds at vocals, guitar, and keyboards together with Perrin Defreitas at drums and percussion. Additional instrumentation is provided by further members Derek Scheeler for lead guitar, Ivan Kvesic again guitar, and the two bassists Jacob Weaver and Jason Legacy.
I Alone has written and recorded their debut studio album, Black Bullet Messiah, and is currently working on a new 4 song EP sneak peeked as “darker and more chaotic”, featuring Laven Reese from Sanatorium 6 and James Gisondi.
I ALONE. Sonorities.
I Alone is a hard rock and alternative metal band from New Jersey warping conventional and predictable song structures and heavy musical spectrums. It combines crushing rock riffs and soaring melodies pouring into moody soundscapes.
Gerswin Reynolds’ vocals and post grunge technique are unique. He owns multifaced vocals I could plumb thoroughly while digging into his timbre and style both with current I Alone project, as well as another heavier band he is part of. He has a great potential with vocals distortions and wicked control over the transition from a full voice to a fry screaming technique, wisely combined with effortless mid range growls. His vocals are very layered, blending a wise mixture of vocal distorted angry shrieks with its full tone in the clear range which is also beautiful. He showcases a full-body deep timbre compounding a smooth falsetto and a smartly diaphragm-supported high pitch tone. Topnotch harsh vocals and clean vocals on both heavy and melodic scenarios.
Perrin Defreitas is the genius behind the wheel, driving the rhythm of this band around nasty curves at high speed or pulling the brake at the end of the race. He’s the one who keeps the grooves tight by making use of catchy drum patterns and hooks, by cranking out the intensity as vocals twist and turn between the guitar licks. He’s also the one keeping it low while the band is embracing simple smooth melodies against heavier sonorities, faithfully tributing the I Alone dichotomy of simple-complexity.
I ALONE. BLACK BULLET MESSIAH.
Black Bullet Messiah and Obvious.
Black Bullet Messiah was released on 1st August 2017. This is the lead single off I Alone’s namesake debut album starring the two musicians. Gerswin Reynolds has also written the guitar section for this track. This song has a very intense vibe and opens up with ablaze crunch guitar riffs and drums putting forth a driving rhythm. Vocals dive in as soon as the riffs become so catchy that a slight headbanging is encouraged. Gerswin jumps in with clean and clear vocals which that bit of grit and rasp sprinkled onto them. He then clings to post grunge technique throughout the unfolding of the whole song with much more gritty vocals into the second section of the track. Refrain is so catchy we are galvanized to instantly try and sing along with their lead singer. The final section of the song harbors some amazing mid range growls over the iconic :”Love, Love, Love” and that’s where drums become aggressive and hard-hitting before the tracks closes.
Listen to Black Bullet Messiah:
Obvious is the second single pulled out from Black Bullet Messiah on 1st September 2017 and seventh song of the record itself. This is a different kind of song in clean and clear vocals and brilliant songrwriting. The track is opening in delightful arpeggio and absolutely clean, not distorted guitar. An intensely beautiful track clashing with previous heavy sonorities which are to be turned down here, and gliding into gentle riffs and drums pattern, but still carrying the same energy which is iconic to these promising artists.
